Whales Stranded In The Everglades

Posted: Updated:

Pictures and chopper footage from the Everglades National Park in Homestead, Florida, shows about 48 stranded pilot whales yesterday. Wildlife workers in Florida will try again today to save nearly four dozen whales.

So far, at least ten whales have died after becoming stranded in shallow waters. Rescuers spent yesterday trying to prod them back out to sea, but the animals aren't cooperating.

The short-finned pilot whales typically live in very deep water, but they're stranded in only three feet of water.

Scientists don't know how the whales ended up in the area.

WPTV reported that NOAA says that planes have been temporarily diverted from the area to not spook the whales.
