Americans are encouraged to give what they can today for "Giving Tuesday."
Ellie Kay said that military families could use some help. About half a million military spouses and children are alone on the home front during the holiday season while family members are deployed.
Kay, a military wife and mother, says you can do a lot by supporting "Operation Homefront" and "Fisher House," which houses families of wounded service members.
"Giving Tuesday is the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and it's the beginning of the holiday giving season," Kay said. "This year, Walmart has given a $2 million donation to Operation Homefront and Fisher House in order to help military families in a real tangible way."
Kay said that the money will provide toys and meals as well as bring home 500 service members to be reunited with their families.
"The donation to Fisher House will help families have a home away from home as it will provide 50,000 nights of stays for military families to be able to be near their loved ones when they're in the hospital having services," Kay said.
According to Kay, Operation Homefront is a non-profit organization that aids military members and their families.
"They do all kinds of things for military families including reuniting families by providing villages for families to live in, especially when their military member is having medical treatment," said Kay. "Fisher House is a home away from home for military families. As military families members are together during the treatment times that their military member is having in a hospital, so it's a real tangible way to be able to keep families together and help the healing process for that service member."
If you want to get involved with Fisher House, you can go to Fisherhouse.org/Walmart
At that site, you can make contributions to sponsor a family for a night's stay to be near loved ones getting medical treatment.
Fisher Houses are located all over the country near medical facilities treating servicemen and women.
You can also go to Operationhomefront.net/Walmart. There you can find out where toys and meals are being distributed in your area.
