The Super Bowl's high price tag

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

In about 61 days the Super Bowl will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The week of festivities leading up to the game is expected to generate a big economic boom for the region, but hosting the biggest game in the world in New York and New Jersey will also come with the biggest price tag in history.

In the New York City area, most things come with a premium price tag, and hosting the Super Bowl is no different.

Hosting the big game will cost a record $70 million, according to IRS documents obtained by the Star Ledger.

Al Kelly, the CEO of the New York New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee, said: "In the case of this marketplace, it's just the general economic reality suggests that it will cost more than it might cost in another city or region."

The big dollar figure reflects the reality of the region and costs to create the committee itself.

"In our case this was a start from scratch. I was the first employee, we now have 31 or 32 employees," Kelly said.

The committee raises money through sponsors and soliciting donations. Costs include funding for the football themed Huddle Shuttle Tour and helping to turn a 10-block stretch of Midtown Manhattan into Super Bowl Boulevard.

"A Super Bowl is a great platform in which to engage and enrich your community," Kelly said. "We've chosen to invest quite a bit of money into our community."

The NFL has said there is no set cost for hosting a Super Bowl. The league covers the cost of the game itself.
