Black Friday bargain hunters shop through the night

GLENDALE, Ariz. -

'Twas the day of Thanksgiving and after the meal, people lined up at malls to score a good deal.

With doors open early, the crowds didn't wait, they packed into malls, no matter the date.

Some shoppers ditched sleep, snagging sales with their kin.

"I came specifically to get those boots that were on sale," said Victoria Alexander.  She showed up at Arrowhead Towne Center in Glendale at 7 p.m. Thursday night.

"Outside, there was lines going from that way to that way," she said.

Many shoppers were surprised the crowds were so big, considering it was Thanksgiving.

Department stores like Macy's, JC Penney and Sears opened their doors at 8 p.m. on that day.  They typically stayed closed in the past.

"I got here at 9:45.  Pretty hectic for the first few hours," said Hydea Newman.

Andrew Heitowitz said, "I got here at 3 in the morning.. it was pretty hectic, a lot of people, like a zoo almost."

Anne Duskin, spokesperson for Arrowhead Towne Center, says the decision to open early paid off.

"We had a great crowd at 8 a.m. they trickled in at 10.. midnight was the final push and it had not stopped."

A positive for retailers, most of the people who showed up on Thanksgiving shopped through the night and continued to shop on Black Friday.

"Cabella's this year.. we gave out almost $9,000 in prizes," said Mitzie Warner, manager of Cabella's Glendale location.

According to Warner, incentives, door prizes and big discounts were another encouraging factor to shop on Thanksgiving.  The same was true at the Tanger Outlets.

"When they open 5, 6 Thursday night rather than 10, all the people come, get all the bargains and leave," said Pete Mizioch.

Alexander added, "I liked it.  The difference between last night and today I guess everybody got the big sales last night."

For Alexander and thousands of others at the mall, it seems the tradition of shopping on Black Friday might be moved up a day.
