Ga. unemployment rate down, metro Atlanta up

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia's unemployment rate was 8.1 percent for October, according to new data from the state Department of Labor.

That's down from a revised September estimate of 8.3 percent and 8.8 percent a year ago, but it still lags behind October's 7.3 percent rate nationally.

All those measures are seasonally adjusted to account for temporary labor market swings.

Local measures do not consider those changes. Those estimates are higher across the state, particularly in rural areas and poorer suburbs, where several dozen counties posted double-digit jobless rates in October.

Of Georgia's 14 metropolitan statistical areas, Athens-Clarke County posted the lowest at 5.8 percent. The highest was Dalton's 10 percent. Metro Atlanta was 7.7 percent. In all three cases, unemployment was higher than in September, but still down from October 2012.
