'Maltese Falcon' figure sells for more than $4M

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) - A statuette of a bird featured in the classic 1941 detective thriller "The Maltese Falcon" has sold for more than $4 million at auction in New York City.

The final price on the 12-inch-tall prop was $4,085,000, which includes a buyer's premium.

Bonhams auction house says the black figurine is one of two known cast lead statuettes made for John Huston's screen version of the film but the only one confirmed by Warner Bros. archives as having appeared in it.

The figurine bears the name of the movie, which starred Humphrey Bogart as private eye Sam Spade. It was offered Monday in a sale of other classic movie memorabilia.

Bonhams declined to provide a pre-sale estimate. The winning bid came over the phone.

Six people were indicted Wednesday in an international ring that managed to take over more than 1,000 StubHub users' accounts and fraudulently buy tickets to such prime events as Jay-Z and Elton John concerts, a New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game and Broadway shows like "The Book of Mormon," the Manhattan district attorney said. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the thieves would then resell the tickets and split up the proceeds.
