Farmington Hills teen still hiccupping more than 2 years later

(WJBK) -

Fox 2's Deena Centofanti brought us the story in September 2012 of a young man from Farmington Hills who couldn't stop hiccupping. Now, more than two years after the first fateful gulp, has the hiccupping stopped?

Centofanti visited Jason Kraft on Monday, learning his hiccups have not stopped.

"A good day would be 40 hiccups a day and bad day would 140 hiccups a day," Kraft says.

Now a sophomore at Michigan State University, he stands out even at a school of almost fifty thousand people.

A couple of times I left class, just walked out and took a breather because it gets annoying, I'm sure, for people especially in these classes where you need to focus," he says.

A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm muscle which sends air upward and out, but why they start or stop remains a mystery.

"I've seen a gastroenterologist - I've seen multiple of those; esophagus specialist; neurologist; psychiatrist; physical therapist; ENT; it goes on and on. I've seen everything I can see."

Jason recently had a CAT scan at the University of Michigan, and he's waiting on results to see if it might give doctors clues about what's triggering the hiccups and how to stop them.
