HARVEY, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A south suburban police officer, who was shot while responding to an armed robbery Sunday night, had something to smile about as he awaited surgery Monday—a card from local 6-year-old boy lauding him as a hero.

The boy wrote a get-well card reading, "Great job going after the bad guy," for Harvey police officer Robert Rolfe, whose "spirits were lifted by the card," a statement from the city said.

The hand-written card from Colin Lewis went on to say, "I am very, very proud. You are a hero!"

Just before 6 p.m. Sunday, Harvey police responded to a burglary in progress at a store at the intersection of 159th and Wood streets, according to a statement from the city.

A single armed suspect -- described as a black male -- opened fire on the officers as soon as they arrived.

"A person of interest is being questioned by investigators," the city announced in a statement late Monday morning, but added "no further comment will be made until charges have been approved."

Rolfe, a six-year Harvey police veteran, was shot twice. He remains in "stable" condition while preparing for surgery Monday with family and fellow officers at his side at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, according to the statement.

Rolfe and his wife of five years have a 5-month-old son, the statement said.

The family "wishes to express gratitude for the continued outpouring of support and well wishes," the statement said.
