COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

Cancer couldn't keep a Cobb County high school student from competition. Austin Rose battled through leukemia while becoming one of the best drum majors in the country.

Rose was diagnosed with leukemia back in June. Leukemia is a type of cancer of the blood.

The 17-year-old didn't let the diagnosis and the treatment stop him from marching forward with the band at Harrison High School.

Rose almost missed the Grand National Championships competition in Indianapolis. Doctors said his ability to fight infection was too low to travel, but blood levels improved within a day's time and Rose was on the road. He was greeted with applause by his classmates.

"It's just great to know I have that support and see all my friends be so excited to see me be able to come there," Rose said.

The teenager is slowly regaining his health and holding on to the high notes of the experience.

"I keep my sense of humor and just focus on the opportunities that I still have," Rose said.

A blood drive in honor of Austin Rose is planned on Thursday, Dec. 19 at Gymnastics Academy of Atlanta on Cobb Parkway. It will be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
