Swimming pool fight over; council votes to remove special use permit

Posted: Updated:

A big decision was made about the future of a long time valley swim club that produced Olympic champion Gary Hall, Jr.

Despite pleas from members of the club, every city council member voted to allow Brophy Prep School to sell the land to a home developer.

The eight to nothing vote approved a measure to remove a special use permit that would have blocked the developer from building homes on the site.

Brophy representatives say they've lost hundreds of thousand of dollars keeping the 30-year-old pool afloat, so they have to sell it.

The sale will leave 400 members of the Phoenix Swim Club to have to look for a new pool.

The Phoenix Swim Club's pool is the only Olympic size outdoor heated pool in the city.

Brophy is planning on building a brand new pool on their campus.

Video: FOX 10's Jessica Flores has the details on what's next for the property.
