NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - At least four people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash in the HOV lanes of the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn.

Nearly a dozen vehicles were involved in the subsequent pile-up Wednesday morning at about 4:30 a.m. after an initial crash in the narrow, HOV lanes approaching 6th Ave.

Traffic delays at the start of the morning rush extended back across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and the Staten Island Expressway. The incident also lead to the closure of at least one lane on the outbound Gowanus.

A back-hoe was brought in to remove the vehicles from between the concrete barriers that separate the HOV lanes.

The victims were take to a hospital. The Associated Press reported the injuries appeared to be minor.

Motorists were advised to use the local lanes and avoid the Gowanus Expressway.
