What happens to wind turbines during high winds?

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

This week's wild winds knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers. So, what happens to Michigan's towering wind turbines during storms like this?

DTE Energy says the turbines are shut down during winds over 45 miles per hour and are constantly monitored and controlled electronically.

"The operation centers monitors whether things are working well or working not, and if there's any indication that there is either too much wind or something wrong with the equipment we can remotely shut it down," explains Irene Dimity, Vice President of Marketing and Renewables for DTE Energy.

DTE Energy is the largest investor in renewable energy in the state and has brought dozens of wind turbines to Michigan. The company says wind energy has been operating well and has brought work and construction jobs to the state.

Dimity says, even with the high winds Monday, the company's turbines were still operating and providing enough green power for 50-thousand families.
