Official: Social Media Message Sparked High School Fight

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

It was a chaotic scene in the third floor hallway at Overbrook High School Monday morning when at least four girls got into a fight that quickly escalated and brought dozens of police officers to the sprawling school complex.

"So far it looks like it is a dispute over some sort of social media message," schools spokesman Fernando Gallard told FOX 29.

"You see all the cops you know something is serious," said Alan Carroll, who came to pick his cousin up at the school after the fight.

The brawl ended with at least 10 students being hauled away by police while the fight was investigated. At least two students sustained minor injuries; a teacher was also hurt during trying to intervene.

"She tried to break up the fight and she injured her knee, she was trying basically to assist," Gallard said.

The fight brought parents like Kristie Manago scrambling to the school to find out what happened and whether her son was injured. Several parents say there has been an increase in violence at the school this year.

"My child is in this school and I'm afraid. There's so much going on nowadays," Manago said.

"You have concern for your child's safety," Carroll added.

School officials confirm the increase in violence at the school, especially on Mondays after a weekend of students interacting on social media. Those disputes then get settled at school. Last semester, a student was shot and killed on the ball field right across from Overbrook High. School security was tight after the fight Monday afternoon.

"Students over the weekend get into disputes through social media and because they come together in one building, then it gets into a fight at school," Gallard explained.

Parents say it's time to crack down on the violence. Some say it may be time to remove their children from the school.

"All I hear is fighting, there was just a shooting, I mean I love my son. I thought he was here to get an education," Manago said.

"The students will be disciplined. They get immediately suspended while we look at the facts. Students could be removed to a disciplinary school in a situation like this," Gallard said.

Police Officials say nine students were charged with a disorderly persons offense and face fines.
