A UT student government group is set to host a catch an illegal immigrant event on campus.
The announcement has ignited a firestorm of anger, even President Powers is weighing in.
The event is set to start at noon, Wednesday, at the UT West Mall. It is sponsored by the Young Conservatives of Texas.
This is the Facebook posting for the group: "Several students will walk around UT with the label illegal immigrant on their clothing. Any UT student who catches one will receive a $25 dollar gift card."
The chairman of the group, Lorenzo Garcia, a former field representative for Greg Abbott's campaign says the purpose is to spark a campus-wide discussion about the issue of illegal immigration and how it affects our everyday lives.
What it did spark was outrage.
Students who fall under the Dream Act held a protest on campus Monday.
We spoke with some of the attendees.
"It's not funny to us to see them play as a game cause we as undocumented we know what reality is. As immigrants we see families being deported. We see families being torn apart," UT student Juan Belman said.
UT student Rey Cepeda added, "I'm upset. I'm just mad that something like this happened. It is not fair. They do not know what's going on and for them to do a campaign like this, $25 gift card to catch an illegal immigrant. It's just upsetting it really is."
UT President Bill Powers called the event "completely out of line with the values of the University of Texas."
He went on further to say, "Our nation continues to grapple with difficult questions surrounding immigration. I asked YCT to be part of that discussion but to find more productive and respectful ways to do so that, do not demean their fellow students."
The chairman of Young Conservatives of Texas, Lorenzo Garcia, spoke with FOX 7 briefly on the phone.
He said he could not comment. He says the event is still on.
The Facebook page, YCT's Catch an Illegal Immigrant Game, now lists 240 who say they will participate and that number is growing. So are the comments against this.
Texans for Greg Abbott Press Secretary Avdiel Huerta issued the following statement:
"Our campaign has no affiliation with this repugnant effort. Illegal immigration and the failed policies of the Obama Administration are not a joking matter.
"Conservatives should not stoop to the level of liberals, whose shenanigans at the Texas Capitol this summer, including chants of 'hail Satan' during Senator Davis' filibuster to allow abortions after five months, did nothing but sidetrack the Texas Legislature."
