Exploring How Budweiser Clydesdale Horse Are Selected

Posted: Updated:

At the Anheuser-Busch training stables in Merrimack, New Hampshire, they take as much pride in their horses as they do in their beer.

The Budweiser Clydesdale Horses have won the hearts of even the toughest beer-drinking football fans.

"The Clydesdales have been associated with the company Anheuser-Busch since 1933. Since the repeal of the prohibition, they delivered the first case of post prohibition beer to the White House," Lester Nisley, a supervisor at the Anheuser-Busch Merrimack Training Facility.

Not every horse born in the Budweiser stables is guaranteed a spot on the Clydesdale Team. Clydesdales can be born with a variety of markings and for a Budweiser horse, the vetting process begins at birth.

A few lucky Clydesdales are shipped off to the training stables in Merrimack, New Hampshire. Here, they participate in a training program that helps them gain the strength and maturity necessary to make the team.

"The young colts come in untrained and don't know much. And a year later when we are able to send them to one of the teams, they are well-mannered, good trained, adult horses ready to go. We have a lot of pride in that and we like to watch how they do on the teams," Lester Nisley said.

However, it's not all "work and no play" for these Clydesdales.

A typical day for a Budweiser horse includes lots of playtime, lots of pampering and, of course, lots of hay.
