Detroit police raid crime-ridden apartments near riverfront

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit police, along with several other law enforcement agencies, are conducting a massive raid Friday near the Detroit riverfront on the city's east side, FOX 2's Robin Murdoch reports.

The bulk of the raid, involving over 150 officers, is being conducted at two apartment buildings near the 9300 block of Jefferson.

Murdoch says officers are executing at least 35 arrest warrants on charges ranging from carjacking, drugs and other felonies.

Detroit Police Cheif James Craig says the area is one of the most problematic in the city with over 600 disturbance calls coming from the apartments this year alone. "This is the new DPD," said Craig. "We're about getting it done. Not only are we driving crime down, but we're responding to community complaints."

Residents cheered at officers walked suspects out in handcuffs and placed them in an awaiting police bus.

Murdoch says at least 25 people were in custody Friday morning.

"This is just the beginning," said Craig.
