Fire contained at Detroit chemical plant, evacuees return home

DETROIT (WJBK) -

The fire at the Chemical Technology, Inc. plant rekindled late Thursday evening, after burning for hours earlier in the day. Firefighters returned to the scene around 10 p.m. and extinguished the flames within the hour. The fire crew tells Fox 2's Ron Savage the area is safe for residents to remain at home.

The building caught on fire after an explosion around 1:30 p.m. earlier in the day. The building had hazardous materials inside.

The plant has been in business for 19 years making polymer interior automotive parts. Inside the plant were plastics, adhesives and alcohol.

Two employees said they were mixing two 55-gallon drums containing chemicals when there was a spark, Detroit Fire Department says. The department says that is not the official cause of the fire; that remains undetermined as the investigation continues.

The result of the fire was a potentially toxic plume of smoke that forced police and fire crews to evacuate nearly a 1,000 foot radius around the fire. Fire officials called the fire a level 3 hazardous material situation at its peak. As of 4:30 p.m. the fire was downgraded to a level 1.

The neighborhood is a mix of homes, small shops and warehouses.
