Lyndhurst man abducted, wife tied up

Posted: Updated:
LYNDHURST, N.J. (AP) - Police are looking for suspects after a Lyndhurst man was abducted and his wife tied up during a home invasion.

The 60-year-old jewelry store owner either escaped or was released by his abductors. He was taken to a hospital after flagging down a passing motorist.

Police say three suspects barged into the couple's home around 9 p.m. Wednesday and drove off with the husband.

The wife managed to free herself and call a relative, who alerted police.

Police Chief James O'Connor tells WABC a suspect fled from the home when officers arrived. He got away and the man was recovered near the Garfield-Clifton border.

The couple's adult son was home at the time, but was unharmed.

Superior Court Judge Mark Cirocca ruled Thursday in favor of the Township of Berkeley Heights and Mayor Joe Bruno in their case against former Police Chief Mike Mathis, who will not be reinstated to his position. In his decision, Cirocco stated that Mathis failed to demonstrate "by clear and convincing evidence" that Bruno lacked the authority to unilaterally accept Mathis' resignation as set forth in the protocols of the Berkeley Heights Township Municipal Code.
