Students Bond In Grief For Vineland Teen

VINELAND, N.J. -

In Cumberland County, New Jersey, a community came together to remember a teenager killed in a car crash.

A moment of silence was held Wednesday for 14-year-old Jermire Lowery.

He and 4 other juveniles were headed down almond road in Vineland, New Jersey Monday night.

His uncle, who was driving the car, lost control and hit a truck. Lowery died at the hospital from his injuries.

9th Grader Angelina Hale decided to wear green to school in honor of their classmate Jermire who was killed in a car accident on Almond road Monday night. Hale says she had 3 classes with Lowry. The students are coming together in his memory.

"It's depressing in our classroom were gonna make stuff with his name on it and have kids sign stuff and put it there to remember him," Hale said.

"You felt the mood in the school that there was a horrible mood and people became more afraid and realized how much their friends meant to them," Student Angelica Filippi-Field said.

A makeshift memorial for the 14-year-old baseball player sits at the crash scene. Students say the accident prompted Vineland High School to hold assemblies by grade level yesterday and remind students of basic roadway safety laws.

"They told us about safety-wearing a seatbelt is very important not something you mess around with," High School Jr Daniel Sakhan said.

Vineland Police have not said whether or not Lowry was wearing a seatbelt but today Captain Tom Ulrich confirmed that there were 5 teenagers in the blank car that crashed and that's a traffic violation. Police say the 17-year-old behind the wheel was a probationary driver which means he's only allowed to have one passenger in the vehicle with him in addition to a parent or any children of his own.

"Obviously the state has programs and enacts laws for safety were gonna do everything in our efforts for safety and prevention," Ulrich said.
