Man charged in fatal I-20 crash arrested days earlier

Posted: Updated:

A man charged in a wreck along Interstate 20 that killed two people was jailed on other charges just a few days earlier, FOX 5 has learned.

The crash happened early Sunday morning in Newton County and involved three vehicles.  One car had run out of gas and the driver of a second car had stopped to help.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, an SUV driven by 28-year-old Kevin Poynter crashed into the other vehicles. The collision killed 19-year-old Bruce Reeves and 35-year-old Tonya Curtis. Several others were injured.

Poynter has been charged with misdemeanor drug possession and driving under the influence, according to the GSP. More charges are likely to be filed once the investigation is complete, authorities said. Poynter has been released on $3,500 bond.

According to authorities, Poynter has been arrested numerous times in Newton and Rockdale counties, including an arrest on public intoxication charges at a Walmart late last week. He was released on bond on those charges a day later.

A spokesperson for the Newton County Sheriff's Office told FOX 5 that Poynter's bond was set by a judge based on the misdemeanor charges he currently faces.

Poynter could not be reached for comment.

A memorialfund has been set up to help pay the funeral expenses of Bruce Reeves.Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo banks.
