EAST MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Memphis Police Officer James Valentine resigned Tuesday afternoon after he was charged with burglary and assault after police say he barged into an ex-girlfriend's house armed with an MPD-issued handgun.

Reviewing internal affairs records, FOX13 News has learned Valentine has a long record of domestic assault.

There were so many investigative files, the detective wheeled them into a room in a cart for FOX13 News to inspect them.

Valentine was fired from the force twice but he was allowed to rejoin the force after his lawyers reached settlements with the city.

READ: Affidavit of complaint against Valentine

Valentine was in court Tuesday facing aggravated burglary and aggravated assault charges. According to an affidavit of complaint he went into an ex-girlfriend's home armed with his MOD-issued handgun. Police say he waved the handgun at the ex-girlfriend and a man telling him to get out of the house.

The victim called police and officers arrested Valentine.

It's not the first time the law enforcement officer has found himself on the other side of the law. MPD Internal Affairs records show a long record of domestic abuse incidents.

According to the internal affairs files, police were called on three separate occasions between 2004 and 2005. Valentine was involved in arguments with an ex-girlfriend each time.

Photos in the case files show the victim's bruises. In one instance the victim says Valentine choked and punched her.

He was fired by the department after a hearing but he was reinstated in 2006 after a settlement with the city.

There was another domestic abuse incident two years ago. A girlfriend called 9-1-1 after a fight. Investigators say the victim's face was bruised.

Again MPD commanders fired Valentine, but he was reinstated later that year after another settlement.

The officer's police personnel files revealed other incidents including a positive drug test for marijuana, and a suspension early in his career for reckless driving. The files also included 14 letters of commendation. Now it looks like he's off the force for good with his resignation.

Valentine was released from jail on a $7,500 bond. He'll be back in court Dec. 5.
