Tom Glavine surprised by Braves' announcement

Posted: Updated:

Current and former Atlanta Braves players said they were just as surprised as everyone to hear about the team's planned move to Cobb County.

On Monday, the Braves announced their plans to move into a new stadium that will be built at the intersection of Interstates 75 and 285 in time for the start of the 2017 season.

Tom Glavine threw the first ever pitch at Turner Field during an exhibition game on March 29, 1997. The 10-time All-Star said he has many fond memories of Turner Field.

"I don't know that there's one thing. I mean, there are so many good things, whether it was that first game that we played there, some of the big games we had there as a team, some of my personal memories and milestone wins," Glavine said.

The news of a new Braves stadium in Cobb County sent shockwaves through Braves nation, including the Glavine household.

"Initially I thought they must be moving Rome or one of the minor league teams and then a buddy of mine said, 'No, it's the big league team,'" Glavine said.

Glavine's seen this before. He started his Braves career at Fulton County Stadium and was there on the first opening night at Turner Field. Just three years ago, his number 47 was retired at Turner Field.

Glavine spent 17 years of his MLB career with the Braves.

"It'll be weird, certainly for me, having played in this city for as long as I did to actually walk into a field that I never played on," Glavine said.

As a new era of Braves baseball gets underway, and there are new memories to be made, but Glavine said there is one thing that will remain the same no matter where this team goes.

"The ballparks might change, but the history is still the history of the organization and that's something that they'll take with them where ever they go," Glavine said.
