Old Macon church may be razed for doughnut shop

Posted: Updated:

MACON, Ga. (AP) - An historic church in downtown Macon is facing demolition to make room for a Dunkin Donuts shop.

WMAZ-TV reports the Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission is scheduled Tuesday to hear a developer's plans to raze the century-old Tremont Temple Baptist Church.

The church has been vacant since 2007 and its congregation, which now meets at a new location, says it needs to sell the brick sanctuary. Church trustee Thelma Robinson says problems with leaks, mold and termites make the old church too expensive to maintain. She says repairs would cost $350,000, roughly twice what the building is worth.

The Historic Macon Foundation is opposing the sale and demolition. Foundation director Josh Rogers says razing the church would cost Macon an irreplaceable example of its African-American architecture.
