JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - -

Two-thirds of Mississippi school districts didn't apply for school security grants awarded in October.

Lt. Gov Tate Reeves spurred lawmakers to set aside $5 million for the grants that pay $10,000 apiece toward armed school resource officers.

Last month, the state awarded $1.57 million - a total of 157 grants in 50 school districts. Bill Welch is the Department of Education official overseeing grants, and he says every district that applied received money.

Among the state's five largest districts by enrollment, four didn't apply.

With more than two-thirds of the money left, officials are seeking more applications, with awards set for January. Welch says officials might ask lawmakers to increase the grant amount to $20,000.

Some districts say they didn't apply because their officers don't fill all the roles required by the grants.
