MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis Tigers are hoping a detour from their inaugural American Athletic Conference schedule gives them a chance at better results.

Memphis (1-6) hosts Tennessee Martin of the Football Championship Subdivision on Saturday afternoon in its final non-conference game. Then the Tigers finish the season with four league games, three on the road.

The Tigers have been competitive into the fourth quarter only to let opportunities slip away. A 34-21 loss to Cincinnati on Oct. 30 in their last game was their worst loss since the opener against Duke.

Memphis coach Justin Fuente says it's encouraging to get close and a lot better than last year when the Tigers were getting blown out. Fuente says he wants to reward them.
