Komen walk to battle breast cancer commences in Phoenix

PHOENIX -

Friday, breast cancer survivors, and their family and friends started a 60-mile walk around the valley. They're raising money to help fight breast cancer.

Their goal is to finish this massive walk by Sunday afternoon.

They were up before the sunrise Friday, prepping for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk to battle breast cancer.

One group of walkers raised at least $200,000 so far. They raised cash by walking in different cities.

"I'm a two-time breast cancer survivor and I created a team 4 years ago called No More Goodbyes. It's basically a group of men and woman who are sick of saying goodbye to people who lost their lives to breast cancer," says Christina Libby.

In 14 different cities this year, thousands of walkers are coming together to walk in the 3 day.

Hundreds of people took on the 60-mile walk early this morning.

"October 22nd I celebrated being a five-year breast cancer survivor so events like the Susan G. Komen 3-Day are so incredibly awesome for me," says Dr. Sheri Phillips, spokeswoman for the foundation.

Survivors say they rely on the support of their community. Many of these women are tackling the same challenges and offering support.

"You're being surrounded by people who truly care whether you live or die, you can make it."

Survivors say the Komen Foundation makes available medications that are helping keep them alive.

"Too many moms had to say goodbye to their children this year. We know way too many of them who lost their lives. The Komens' are diligently trying to find a cure and treatments and trials that have kept people alive," says Libby.

All the money raised here goes toward research, training and community support.
