Closed Lilburn school scrubbed down after outbreak

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

An elementary school in Lilburn is closed Friday after dozens of students reported falling ill, according to Gwinnett County Schools.

Students should have been pouring into the school Friday morning, but the only ones who arrived were cleaning crews tasked with washing down the school from top to bottom after nearly 10 percent of the school's population reported they were getting sick.

The Gwinnett County Health Department recommended that Knight Elementary School on North River Road not hold classes Friday after about 80 students reported symptoms of gastroenteritis on Thursday. About 720 students attend the school.

Gastroenteritis often causes diarrhea and/or vomiting, according to health officials. The symptoms usually develop in one to two days after exposure and most people get better in one to 10 days without medication, health officials said.

School officials said that classes are expected to be held on Monday, but parents who notice their children exhibiting symptoms of the illness are asked to keep that student home until they are symptom-free without medication for 24 hours.

Health officials also recommend the following:

* Watch your child and members of your family to see if they develop diarrhea, and/or vomiting.
* If your child develops diarrhea, contact your child's physician. Inform your doctor that students diagnosed with gastroenteritis attend your child's school.
* Encourage your child and family members to thoroughly wash their hands before preparing or eating food, after using the toilet, and upon returning home from school in the afternoons.
* Alcohol-based hand sanitizers often are NOT effective against these types of viruses so be sure to use soap and water when washing your hands.
