Campus landmark toppled at Southern Poly

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities are investigating the toppling of a campus landmark at Southern Polytechnic State University.

A 10-foot steel globe outside the student center at the Cobb County school fell off its pedestal overnight Tuesday. Originally, it was thought that it could be related to students unhappy about the school's planned merger with Kennesaw State University.

But after examining the wreckage, students said they believed the faulty welding was to blame for the fall.

The school does believe students upset over the proposed merger were writing messages on the plaza, which is a tradition at the school. When they were writing on the globe – also a tradition -- officials believe the welding failed.

Ultimately, it's believed the incident isn't vandalism, but symbolism over the changing world at the school.

The Board of Regents must still approve the merger with Kennesaw State.
