WASHINGTON -

Metropolitan police have been questioning several people and say they have a person of interest in custody after a brazen, midday shooting in Northeast D.C.

Three men and a woman were shot by a lone gunman around 1:15 p.m. in front of the Payless ShoeSource store on Minnesota Avenue near Benning Road.

Law enforcement sources say a police officer on foot patrol responded within seconds.

Witnesses reported hearing as many as six shots and seeing a man run into a house directly behind the shoe store on Clay Place.

Two of the victims were said to be seriously injured.

There is no word on a motive or on how the four people were related.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier went to the scene and said she expected the case to be solved quickly.
