OXFORD, Miss. (FOX13) -

With health care reform the hot topic right now, it's sometimes hard to figure out what's going to be covered and what won't be.

Prescription drugs can be expensive without coverage so the city of Oxford, Miss., is helping by offering up a new FREE prescription discount card. Hundreds of the cards already have been picked up.

The cards are provided not only by the city of Oxford but by the National League of Cities as well. The NLC was founded in 1926 and is an advocacy group representing 19,000 cities, towns, and villages throughout the county.

"You actually don't have to sign up," said Al Hope "You basically you just come in and get a card from city hall. That's where we have them right now. We will have them at the library later. We got about 1,000 coming in and we had a 1,000, and looking to get rid of another 1,000."

There isn't a lot of paperwork to get a card. As a matter of fact there is no paperwork, and most pharmacies take the card.

"People just come in and pick up a card and start using them," Hope said. "Nine out of 10 pharmacies respect the card so I think the public should know about it."

But be careful. Prescription claims made using a city of Oxford prescription discount card may negate Medicare or Medicaid claims on the same prescription.

"Now this is not an insurance card but if you have insurance and your cards don't cover, so they say you can save about 30 percent off of your drugs by using this," Hope said.
