MIDTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

A MATA trolley car caught on fire around 10:30 a.m. Monday at Madison and Bellevue in Midtown. Ten people were on the trolley at the time including the conductor.

Several people were treated for smoke inhalation. Several passengers had to be treated on the scene. Many were taken to nearby hospitals.

According to a MATA spokesperson, the trolley operator and passengers heard a loud pop in the trolley's operator area and then they saw smoke enter the trolley. The fire started in the control stand and from there it spread relatively quickly. All passengers were able to get out on their own.

The cause of the fire has not yet been released but the trolley was destroyed.

"It appears at this time that the fire started, originated in the control stand on the trolley car," Memphis Fire spokesman Lt. Wayne Cook said. "The fire spread through it relatively quickly but we are thankful that everyone was able to escape safely."

The rail line on Madison Avenue will be temporarily suspended, and replaced with bus service.  The Main Street and Riverfront lines will remain in service.

Trolley 452 (W2 class) was originally built in 1927 by the  Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board and is one of 752 that was built between 1923- 1956.

MATA purchased Trolley 452 in 1997 from the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority.  The streetcar was refurbished in 2004 by GOMACO and the cost was $567,899. Federal funds covered 80-percent of the restoration.

MATA reports no previous major problems with 452.  The last preventive maintenance was performed on  Oct. 25, 2013 and no deficiencies were cited.
