(from earlier reports)

A Tipton County woman dies after being shot by officers.

Investigators say the Tipton County Sheriff's Office received a suicidal party call from the husband of 64-year-old Nattela Blackwell around 8 a.m. this morning. He told them Blackwell had walked away from their home with a handgun.

Covington Police spotted Blackwell in the parking lot of a shopping center near Highway 51 at Lanny Bridges Avenue in Covington.

When Tipton County deputies arrived on the scene, officers and deputies ordered Blackwell to drop the weapon. She refused and pointed the gun at the officers who shot Blackwell.

Blackwell was taken to Baptist Memorial hospital in Tipton where she was pronounced dead.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now investigating the shooting.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the result of the TBI investigation.

Tipton County Sheriff Pancho Chumley released a statement saying he believes this to be an incident of suicide by cop.

"Our deputies have been placed on Administrative Leave pending the outcome of the TBI investigation and to provide support after an officer involved shooting. I anticipate the investigation to support this unfortunate incident as a "suicide by cop". Any death in this manner is tragic; however the safety of the citizens, bystanders and officers is paramount."
