DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Actor Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band performed Friday evening to a packed house at the Cook Convention Center in support and to raise funds for wounded Mid-South war veteran Marine Cpl. Christian Brown of Munford.

Sinise and his Gary Sinise Foundation are trying to raise funds to build a smart home for Cpl. Brown, who lost both his legs when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in December 2011 while deployed in Afghanistan.

"It's all to protect our Constitution, to defend our freedom," Sinise said before the concert. "If you're going to that and put on a uniform you're going to get hurt, I believe we all, all the citizens who benefit from that freedom, rally around them and do whatever we can do support them."

The Lt. Dan Band travels the world doing USO-type shows for the troops, raising money to help wounded veterans. Smart homes feature many amenities, including iPad-controlled heating and air conditioning, roll-in bathrooms, and automated doors.

Friday night is was Cpl. Brown's turn.

"It's just frustrating. It's not really ... that difficult. In fact there are so many things that on such a small level, on a day-to-day basis it just starts to add up," Brown said. "It stretches you out a little bit. You wish things could be easy and jump up and do things like everybody else. (The Smart Home) is going to help me with the transition."

Memphis native and singer Grace Askew also performed and a painting of the American flag with the World Trade Center towers, created in four minutes by artist Scott Lobaido, was raffled off for $12,000.

Earlier in the week Lobaido created an American flag mural on the side of the police precinct on Beale Street.
