DA: 4 arrested in LIRR skimming and camera scam

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Thieves were ripping off people by taking a skimming device and putting it over this area where you insert your credit or debit card on LIRR ticket kiosks. And they were also sneaky by putting a camera that looked down on your fingers as you typed your PIN.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced the arrest of four people from Romania.

The skimming devices were found on ticket vending machines in Sea Cliff, Bayside, Great Neck, Merrillon Avenue in Garden City and Greenvale. Metro-North ticket machines were also compromised in Chappaqua.

Timothy Grim was a victim of the scam at the Merrillon Avenue station. The thieves got his PIN and withdrew more than $3,000 from his bank account.

The thieves used putty to attach the skimming device and camera to the machines, Rice said.

The scam was discovered after a customer noticed one of the tiny cameras dangling from a machine.

The investigation is ongoing. Officials suggest checking your bank account on a regular basis.
