Animated comedy 'Free Birds' opens in time for holiday season

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

The animated comedy 'Free Birds' is hoping to alter the traditional role of the turkey in the holiday celebration.

The star-studded cast includes Woddy Harrelson, Owen Wilson, and Amy Poehler.

The plot includes two turkeys who team up to travel back in time to change history - and remove turkeys from the holiday menu.

The movie opens in theaters today.

Amy Poehler says the role is unique for her, "I've played a bunch of different kinds of characters in animated films, some really bossy, some really wide eyed, some really crazy. This is the first time I played like I was the straight turkey, the level headed turkey of all of them, the one who took the most offense to say turkeys are dumb."
