Caterpillar celebrates opening of new Athens facility

ATHENS, Ga. -

Opening ceremonies were held Thursday for a brand new Caterpillar manufacturing plant in Athens. Eventually, the plant will employ more than 1,000 workers.

Company officials joined state and local dignitaries at Thursday's grand opening celebration.  The one-million-square-foot facility will produce small track-type tractors and mini hydraulic excavators.  Once it's fully operational, it will employ 1,400 people.

The state approved about $75 million and a variety of incentives to help close the deal with the company, but officials say it'll be well worth it because it will bring a big economic boost to the area.
