CORDOVA, Tenn. (FOX13) -

A Memphis Police officer was injured and the officer's cruiser mangled in a crash after a chase of an alleged thief in Cordova and East Memphis Wednesday afternoon.

According to Memphis Police, an off-duty officer, while working at the YMCA at Club Center, was notified that a male suspect was in the locker room breaking into lockers. The off-duty officer approached the suspect when he fled the scene.

The officer followed the suspect to a Red Robin restaurant on Germantown Parkway in Cordova, at which time the suspect got into a black Cadillac and another unknown male exited the vehicle. The suspect then fled eastbound towards Appling.

Additional officers were dispatched and joined in the pursuit of the suspect. Neighbors on Dexter Road in East Memphis heard a loud noise as the pursuit ended in a crash at Dexter Road and Chimney Rock Boulevard.

Police said the suspect slammed into three police cruisers and a personal vehicle trying to flee police.

One officer chasing the suspect was trapped inside a mangled cruiser. Memphis firefighters had to cut the officer out of the cruiser.

The officer was taken to The MED in Memphis and is being treated for non-critical injuries.

The alleged carjacking suspect was apprehended at Dexter Road and Chimney Rock.

Upon further investigation, police said they found that the suspect, 54-year-old Paul Joseph Vlasak, had rented the vehicle that he was driving and eluding police. The vehicle was not carjacked.

As well, investigators have not located the person who exited the vehicle.

Police charged Vlasak with aggravated assault, burglary, DUI, and evading arrest. He was taken to The MED and is still in the hospital.

The incident and crash remains under investigation.
