CORDOVA, Tenn. (FOX13) -

A 19-year-old was found fatally shot in the middle of the street of an apartment complex Tuesday evening in a Memphis suburb unaccustomed to violence.

As Shelby County Sheriff deputies tracked down a suspect neighbors at the Camden Grove Apartments in Cordova are shocked, but believe this incident is isolated.

Most residents who live in Cordova, how they feel about the area is the same.

"Normally it's very quiet."

"Real quiet."

Even Shelby County Sheriff's deputies who respond to this part of the county said this neighborhood is quiet.

"It's very quiet, this is obviously a part of Cordova," SCSO spokesman Chip Washington said Tuesday evening. "But I've been here almost four years and I've never had a call to this particular address. Passed this complex many times. It's a very quiet area."

Tuesday evening shortly before 9 p.m. 19-year-old Martez Jackson suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. His body was found in the middle of the street. He died at the scene, Washington said.

FOX13 News knocked on one of his last known addresses for Mr. Jackson but no one answered. Charlie Dennis, who lives across the street, said the victim was "quiet."

"Kind of quiet, kept to himself," Dennis said. "We'd mow the grass like I'd mow the grass. He'd come out and he'd talk. Hind of younger guy."

Deputies say witnesses heard one shot and a vehicle drive off, but no one could give a description.

Many neighbors have lived in this area for years without incident. In fact many say the area is so quiet they're just unaccustomed to hearing about violence.

"I lived out here in Camden Grove," said resident Lovell Harris. "As a matter of fact when my house burned and it was very, very, very quiet."

Neighbors say they're not concerned and believe this incident was isolated.

"Sad fact is a 19-year-old is dead tonight and we don't know why, but we'll find out why," Washington said.

Which is exactly what neighbors who live in an area want, where the norm is to be unaccustomed to violence.

Washington said his deputies are seeking witnesses to this homicide or who might have information about this fatal shooting. You are urged to contact CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH or the SCSO Detective Unit at 901-222-5600.
