DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

An expected purchase of the 170-year-old Memphis landmark is being counted on to spearhead the fight against sickle cell anemia.

The Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee said they intend to purchase the historic Hunt-Phelan home and redevelop the property around it to expand services to the parents and children of sickle cell patients.

Mayor A C Wharton was among those on hand Tuesday to help kick off the nonprofit campaign that hopes to create the organization's "campus for caring" in Downtown Memphis.

"There are people in our community, in our region and in our state, across America and other parts of the world who are suffering, Who are in pain, who will benefit from the trait testing, psycho-social services and other ongoing support that we can provide," said Trevor Thompson, Sickle Cell Foundation of Tennessee.

It estimated 2.5 million people carry the sickle cell gene in America and 100,000 live with the disease that's found most frequently among African Americans.
