MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Memphis Light Gas and Water has issued a scam warning against callers looking to rip off business customers using the Green Dot Money Pack card.

This scam is nationwide.

"In my hand is a Green Dot Money Pack card," said Dan Hendrickson, Better Business Bureau national spokesman. "You can pick up it at various stores and use them to pay bills online or transfer money to a debit card. They are perfectly legit. Unfortunately the scammers of all sorts have discovered Green Dot Money Pack cards and in each state they are getting people to unwittingly give them money through their bogus scams."

The scammers are calling MLGW customers and telling them they are calling from the MLGW Resources Center. The only problem is the resources center is not open on weekends when the calls are being made.

"This scam is being perpetrated mostly on commercials business and mainly restaurants who have got to stay in business and the thought of losing power that could cost thousands," said Jerry Collins, MLGW President and CEO. "A restaurant that serves customers obviously does not want to lose power, so they kind of scam works with restaurants where it might not with other businesses."

The key to the scam is the Green Dot Money Pack card. Once you load it with money and give the scammers the number on the back, the deal is done. There is no way to trace the money.

So far no scammers have been caught.

"There actually have been customers in the MLGW service area that have fallen for this scam and paid the money, yes," Collins said. "We talking hundreds of dollars or thousands, hundreds of dollars."

Just remember the red flags: MLGW will not call and demand a quick payment or they will cut your power off, and if anyone tells you to load up a Green Dot Money Pack card be very cautious, no matter what the caller tells you.

"MLGW on no occasion will have a person call a customer and say we're going to cut off your power if you don't pay your bill immediately," Collins said. "MLGW never does that so if that ever happens it's not MLGW."
