Arrest made in Fayetteville store clerk beating, robbery

Posted: Updated:

Police have arrested a man accused of beating a store clerk.

Authorities accuse William Robert Paul of attacking a 58-year-old man with a metal pipe and stealing two cash drawers from the Greenway BP store on North Glynn Street in Fayetteville on Monday.

The victim was working at the gas station around 1:20 a.m. when police say Paul approached him and demanded money. The clerk, who authorities said has limited mobility and uses a wheelchair, stood up and punched the robber in the face. That's when Paul allegedly beat the man with a tire tool.

Police said that Paul actually works at a Checkers restaurant next door to the gas station and that he tried to cover his face with a sweatshirt.

A few hours later, police responded to a robbery at a Waffle House at the Fulton-Fayette county line.  They caught the suspect there and sent Paul's photo to detectives still working at the BP.  They say he matched the man in the surveillance video at the gas station.

Paul is charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and battery in the BP robbery. He's also expected to be charged in Fulton County in the Waffle House robbery.

Police said Paul was out on parole when he was arrested.

The injured store clerk remains hospitalized with serious head wounds.
