Nassau County election is rematch of tight 2009 race

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - The Nassau County Executive race on Long Island features a rematch of the 2009 contest that was decided by fewer than 400 votes.

Incumbent Republican Edward Mangano is trumpeting his record of not raising taxes.

Democrat Thomas Suozzi claims Mangano has mismanaged the county's finances.

Nassau has been under the supervision of a state-appointed fiscal watchdog committee since 1999.

Lawrence Levy of Hofstra University, an expert on politics, said people around the country are watching the results of this race for hints about the national election scene in 2014.

Levy wondered if the recent federal government shutdown will help the incumbent or the challenger in the local race.

Suozzi lost a primary for governor in 2006, but is now promising to not run for higher office.

Some beaches were open to the public but closed to swimmers. The National Weather Service issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.
