'Mrs. Claus' Will No Longer Get Letters From Children

Posted: Updated:

This Christmas will be a little less merry for children in Southern Arizona. A woman who responds to letters to Santa won't be getting those letters anymore. She says it's because her local post office has safety concerns.

For 25 years, Jackie DeHart and her husband Ted have been receiving letters from children that are addressed to Santa Claus. Jackie and Ted have been writing back and keeping those children's imaginations alive.

Even after Ted passed away, Jackie kept the tradition alive as a way to keep his memory alive.

However, last week, the post office told her she'd stop getting letters because of safety concerns. Officials were worried that people could get a hold of the letters she receives and learn the addresses of the kids.

DeHart is worried that this move will spoil Christmas for many young children.

"It's just horrible. It's like part of my... being," she said. She also says that writing back to these kids makes her feel valuable. Discontinuing the letters will destroy her sense of purpose.

"There's a big void in my life now," she said.
