Nutritionists: Parenting Advice When It Comes To Food
Parents, we all know that sometimes it's a chore to get your kids to finish their meal. However, some nutritionists say that those phrases we're all guilty of using at the table to get our kids to eat are big no-no's.
One phrase you often hear is:
"YOUR SISTER OR BROTHER IS EATING, WHY AREN'T YOU?"
Nutritionists say that this phrase makes your child feel inferior. Instead, tell them "I know you'll get there, it takes time to learn to like new foods".
"YOU DIDN'T EAT ENOUGH. TAKE A FEW MORE BITES, THEN YOU CAN LEAVE THE TABLE."
Nutritionists say that children may learn to ignore their body cues about when they're full. This habit could lead to over-eating, and childhood obesity. Instead, nutritionist recommend reminding kids when their next meal, is so they can learn to manage their hunger.
IF YOU EAT SOME VEGGIES, YOU CAN HAVE DESSERT."
Nutritionists say that you shouldn't try to bribe kids with treats. Instead focus on good eating habits.
"IF YOU'RE GOOD AT THE STORE, YOU CAN HAVE A COOKIE", OR PUNISHING KIDS BY THREATENING TO TAKE AWAY DESSERT.
It's the same deal here logic here: kids will think that every time they're good, they deserve a treat. Instead, you should let them know ahead of time what the consequences are for their bad behavior and leave food out of it.
"YOU DON'T LIKE DINNER? WANT ME TO MAKE YOU SOMETHING ELSE?"
Kids will think that they never have to try new foods because mommy and daddy will always make them something else. Instead, tell your kids that some nights they get their favorite foods, and other nights, it's mom or dad's favorite. Eating different meals encourages kids to try new things and accept a wider variety of foods.
