'Women On Course' Providing Networking For Female Entrepreneurs

Posted: Updated:

Women entrepreneurs are learning what men have known for years, golf is great for building relationships. However, it's not just about the sport itself, it's about the doors it can open.

It seems like a great time playing golf and enjoying great golf courses and camaraderie. However, as more women climb the corporate ladder, they are learning what men have known for years: golf may be the best thing there is to building relationships because the game provides access to important people.

"You get 4 hours with key people. You can sell your product in 4 hours you can have a job interview in 4 hours," said Rachel Kane, "and you're a female and you play golf; it's intriguing; it's another way to differentiate yourself.

Rachel Kane is an avid golfer. She played golf at Bucknell, and two years ago, she became a global marketer. She wanted to find a way to stay close to the game and help women in the business world, so she started women on the course to help connect women and encourage them to play golf.

"Women, who a couple of years ago got laid off…or started their own company…they're looking at ways to network and grow their company," she told FOX 29's Iain Page.

Megan Brown works at California Closets and took up golf this summer. She says that golf has helped her forge new relationships in the business world.

"If you meet other people and clients of mine….it's a common thread, so it's, ‘oh, you play golf? so do I. when did you start?' It's an icebreaker really," said Brown.

You don't have to be a golfer to attend a Women on Course event. A third of women who show up to these events, like Marissa Ciancio, a financial rep looking to increase her client base, has never picked up a club.

"This is my first time," Ciancio said. "I am the beginning golfer; I will be attending the clinic today."

For a lot of women who have never played golf, women on the course can introduce them to the game and all that goes along with it, so they won't feel intimidated when they show up at the golf course for the first time.

"What to do if you're invited to play with a man at a charity golf event where your company's a sponsor but you've never touched a club but you really wanna go?" remarked Kane. "It's really helpful…tools even for beginners that they can learn at one of our events
