There are a lot of hunters here in Arizona, but not many with a gun like this. The 'smart rifle' is very expensive and just came on the market.

I got to test it out.

And no matter how you feel about hunting, you have to be impressed with what the technology in this gun can do.

At $27,500, the TrackingPoint XActSystem Smart Rifle costs as much as a lot of cars. Why so much? This rifle almost shoots itself with incredible accuracy.

A high tech scope automatically computes distance, temperature, barometric pressure, the spin of the bullet, even the curvature of the earth, and lets you hit targets at amazing distances.

"It takes a lot of the guesswork -- or art depending how advanced you are -- of shooting at long range," says Gary Smith, TrackingPoint.

I got to take a few shots. The way the rifle works is you find your target and tag it with a red dot. Then you pull the trigger. While the trigger is down, you move a red X over the tag. When the shot is lined up, the rifle then fires on its own.

Almost like a guided missile. And what you see through the scope is sent wirelessly to an iPad.

My first target was 500 yards away. I could just barely see it with my naked eye, and the camera was zoomed all the way in here. You can just make out the steel rectangle target near the top of the frame.

After I shoot, listen how long it takes for the bullet to hit the target.

"Now lower the butt of your gun until the crosshair intersects the tag," says Smith.

Now I move back to a target 800 yards away. 8 football fields, a shot an untrained shooter like me normally might make once in 30 tries.

Guess what -- I made it.

While the gun is designed for big game hunting, TrackingPoint says it has sold some to the army, which is testing the guns for possible military use.
