Cop Helps Admitted Shoplifter

Posted: Updated:

A shoplifter in Florida could face up to two months in prison, but not Jessica Robles, a mother who was desperate for food to feed her children. She was charged with stealing food from Publix Supermarket in Miami at the end of September.

Robles admitted she made a decision to shoplift groceries out of desperation. She said she found herself in a situation where she looked at her the children, 12-year-old Anais and two younger boys, and realized she had no money left for food

"I asked her, why would you do that? What would make you do that? And she said my children are hungry," Officer Vicki Thomas of the Miami-Dade Police said.

Officer Thomas decided to do something out of the ordinary for this helpless mother and her family.

"I made the decision to buy her some groceries because arresting her wasn't going to solve the problem of her children being hungry," Thomas said.

Officer Thomas did charge the woman with a misdemeanor and an ordinance to appear in court, but while looking through records, she found no habitual shoplifting from this woman's past. She said her act of kindness was well worth it.

"To see them go through the bags when we brought them in was just like Christmas, and that $100 to me was worth nothing," Thomas said.

Robles said that her boyfriend had recently lost his job and she was currently receiving federal assistance for food. Because of paper work issues, she found herself in a situation where she simply had no money for food.

Robles showed her gratitude by thanking Officer Thomas from the bottom of her heart, and in response Officer Thomas hopes that in the future Jessica will also help someone in need.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
