DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Detroit Police Department's mobile precinct relocated Monday from the west side of the city to the east side. The new location is on Joy and Evergreen roads in the parking lot of the Mobil gas station, targeting an area where gas station crime is on the rise.

"A lot of the Family Dollars and a lot of the gas stations, you have a lot of drug activities at some of the gas stations and at the Family Dollars you get a lot of [robbery/assault] so we're trying to reduce that being visible," Michael Martin of the Detroit Police Department tells Fox 2's Maurielle Lue.

The mobile command center is a fully-functional police station, even equipped to take police reports. Residents can talk to officers about what's going on in their community and the center is completely wired in with the nearby Sixth Precinct.

"Me and my partner, we get out, get to know some of the store owners, some of the customers and patrons that come around here. So it helps out. We can see the pattern of what's going on here in the community," Martin says.

For the next two weeks school busses will drop children off near the command center so officers can make sure they get home safely, in efforts to cut down on robberies and scaring nearby drug dealers looking to target the kids' phones.

"I do this, as police officers, to not just reduce - we want to eliminate crime. I know that sounds impossible, but citizens deserve a lot better," Martin says.

On Saturday, October 26 members of the Commercial Auto Theft department will be stamping car windows with its Vehicle Identification Number. VIN etching can increase the odds of police recovering a vehicle if it is stolen.

The VIN etching will take place at the mobile precinct from 2 - 9 p.m. if weather permits.

A massive construction project is underway in Macomb County. If you travel on Van Dyke, you know how rough it is. Now, jackhammers are out there tearing up a two-and-a half mile stretch from 11 Mile to Chicago Rd. The road will be milled, then resurfaced with asphalt. New curbs will be installed. Nine intersections get new traffic signals. Sidewalks will be ramped to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Weather permitting, the project will be finished this summer.

Ford Motor Co. on Sunday unveiled a new Escort sedan designed in China for global sale at a Beijing auto show that highlighted the growing influence of Chinese tastes on the industry. Automakers are looking to China's biggest auto show this year to help boost sales in this huge but cooling market. Total sales last year reached 17.9 million vehicles, but growth is expected to slow from 15.7 percent to as low as 8 percent, even as newcomers including Lincoln and Tesla enter the market.
