DETROIT (WJBK) -

A woman was giving a man a ride through her transportation business when she says he began attacking her with a hammer and drove off in her vehicle. Witnesses in the parking lot were able to help the woman and chased after the man, helping police find the stolen vehicle.

"I was drenched in blood."

Bonnie Preston doesn't want to show her face - it is bruised and swollen, sewn back together with stitches after she says a man beat her with a hammer and stole her car.

"[I've] never experienced anything like this before - still in shock," her son Tim tells Fox 2's Amy Lange. "I'm glad my mom is okay."

It all started when Bonnie took a call from 59-year-old Leodis Strong around 8 p.m. on Monday.

Bonnie has a transportation service that takes people to the store or to doctor appointments. Bonnie picked Strong up and went to a parking lot here at Davison and Linwood streets. She says Strong was outside her vehicle, talking to a friend, when she had a bad feeling about the situation. She says she was just about to drive away when Strong jumped through an open window of the car and started attacking her with a hammer.

As Bonnie struggled to get out of her vehicle some witnesses nearby started yelling at the suspect to stop, and they chased after him when he took off in Bonnie's Trailblazer.

"Thank you. I appreciate everything you did. If they didn't show up I don't know what would have happened," Tim says.

The witnesses helped police recover Bonnie's stolen Trailblazer later that night. Tuesday afternoon Detroit Police arrested Strong. Strong is currently on parole, having served time for auto theft, felonious assault, home invasion, armed robbery and murder.

"It's real terrifying for me. I feel she's a brave woman for going through that. I just wish it never happened," Tim shares.
