LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

It's one thing to be a political distraction.  It is quite another to be a political liability.

Soon to be ex-state treasurer Andy Dillon was the former and was well on his way to the latter which is why he is leaving the Snyder administration next month.

For months the so-called Dillon-divorce story has found its way into the news hole as he and his ex were making the kind of news that the governor's office was monitoring.

When it got really ugly many weeks ago, Mr. Dillon, who knows a thing or two about political distractions and liabilities, offered to step down.  The front office, knowing that he was a critical part of the Detroit bankruptcy rescue saga, turned down the offer then.

Recently when Mr. Dillon offered again, the answer was yes.

Some have suggested Dillon was forced out.  Two sources, one inside and one outside the government, vehemently deny it.  However one of those insiders hints that had he not departed, it might have reached the point where he was shown the door.

Mr. Dillon has never said it, but he's no dummy.  He knows the governor is in a re-election mode as an unannounced candidate.  He knows the governor will have a challenge as it is without adding the Dillon personal drama  to the mix.

The nasty divorce story was one thing, but the broader implications centered on his role as the chief cheerleader and facilitator for a Chapter 9 berth for Detroit.  It was only a matter of time before the Democrats turned up the volume and suggested that Mr. Dillon was distracted from doing his duty, paid for by the taxpayers,  while he was privately trying to put his shattered personal life  back together again.

You could see the "dereliction of duty" charge coming a mile away.

So rather than let it fester until it reached critical mass and hurt the governor, he hung it up.

Someone says Mr. Dillon does not have any career plans on the table as he is more concerned with setting a peaceful Thanksgiving table for his children next month.

And the governor's handlers are grateful they didn't have to shove him out the door to avoid a political liability from getting worse.
